An International Wombyns Day festival – featuring music, art, spoken word and more – is coming to the corner of Fourth and French streets in Santa Ana from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
This is the second year that the free festival is being staged by the non-profit group Comite Prodemocracia En Mexico.
Last year’s event centered on the presentation of a play chronicling the life of Mexican human rights attorney Digna Ochoa, who was found dead in her Mexico City office in October 2001.
This year’s event also includes a 3 p.m. performance of the play “Digna Valentia,” but has been broadened to include music, Aztec dances, resource tables, art and more.
Organizations and artists who are scheduled to be on hand include: Radio Insurgencia Femenina from KPFK 90.7 FM, Seeds of Resistance (a women’s art collective), Ticicalli Yahualli (a birthworker collective), El Centro Cultural de Mexico, Mass Media Records, Latino Health Access, MANA de Orange County, Women Helping Women, Arte de la Tierra, Las Adelitas, Suzy’s Art, La Vaga Rosa, Sol de Cobre, and others.
Priscila Hernandez, an organizer for the festival, said that it’s designed to foster an appreciation for women in attendees. It also aims to encourage women to tap into their confidence and creativity, she said.
“We hope women are motivated by seeing other women doing things like helping each other and being active in theater, art, radio and performance,” said Hernandez, 31, of Santa Ana. “At the same time, we want to empower our families and our communities by starting from the inside out.”
